"Passion is a tower of flame, but curiosity is a tiny tap on the shoulder;
a little whisper that says, 'Hey, that's kind of interesting...'"
Hello you,
I sat down this morning to write about curiosity.
I wrote a lot, starting at the top, adding words at the bottom, faffing about in the middle, trying to link it all up. Failing.
I wondered about you, about what it is you’d enjoy reading, what would make you curious. I wrote more. I moved some words around.
I took a break, surprised and a little annoyed at myself for spending so long going around in circles.
I had soup for lunch, let the dog out; it’s 8’ and blustery. It feels colder than when it was 2’ and calm.
I returned and started over. Here’s where we ended up… I embraced the rambling nature after all. Scroll to the bottom if you’re just here for some thinking prompts 😘
During my morning scroll1 I came across a post that was exactly what I needed. And maybe you need this too… so I wonder what will happen if I share.
The post was sharing Elizabeth Gilbert’s thoughts on passion and curiosity.
On how our culture "fetishises passion and certainty" so that those of us who don’t have big clear goals might be left feeling anxious or failing somehow. And how curiosity is the antidote, a compassionate approach that brings us growth and creativity, even during times when the much-desired passion is absent.
Wow.
She’s talking directly to me surely?
Why do I say that? Because I’m a generator type2 and generators (and MG’s) often can’t see the end goal, we often just don’t know when we’re asked “where will you be in 5 years?” Heck, I can’t plan a summer holiday until July. We’re just not designed like that. We’re designed to follow the sacral breadcrumbs, be in the moment.
It can be frustrating and yes, I feel less-than somehow when I can’t rustle up a 5 year plan. But the reality is that my passion is found in the moment, it’s in response to what’s going on. For sure I’m fired up when I’m with a client, thriving on the exchange and growth I witness; I’m passionate about my garden when I’m in it, and excited about the new shoots coming up right now; and yet between? A waiting. Neutrality.
What keeps me going then, in the space when my sacral is resting in neutral, not pulling me forward?
It’s curiosity.
“I wonder what if…”
Last year my Word of the Year was TRUST. It could just have easily been EXPERIMENT or CURIOSITY. The energy I wanted for the year was about letting go of my expectations and discovering where my sacral would taking me. Or not take me. The energy was of surrender, of letting go. Being curious where the universe would take me if I wasn’t pushing.
Wandering. Wondering. Asking what if…?
Perhaps you wonder how it worked out? There were big unexpected things that came from saying yes, like traveling to Australia on retreat, and putting my treasured home on the market after going to view a house that logically wasn’t right for me and falling in love with it anyway.
But also unexpected things that came from saying no, from creating space, equally magical… like saying no to chasing people who’d retreated from me and instead finding deep friendships with people who were already in my world, and stopping ‘marketing’ only to sign more new clients than ever before.
None of these would have happened without me leaving space for curiosity. For the the illogical-but-oh-so-right YES’s and the breathing-out-relief of the NO’s. Past me would have ignored these body wisdoms, held back with over-thinking and old unhelpful stories.
Will I be staying on the curious and winding path? Oh yes!

One of the ways I’ve been letting my sacral guide me is deliberately allowing myself time to scroll without guilt. Time to ricochet around the wide open space of Instagram, letting my sacral respond in each moment and lead me from post to comment to profile to post and beyond.
In the past I’d been resistant to spending time like this, judging myself harshly for wasting my energy, but honestly this is part of me, my Generator strategy, to be in response. Not to be initiating from my mind. To be allowing the inspiration to find me, hit me hard, and light up my sacral so that I know what’s next.
Because Generators don’t know what’s next. We don’t have access to that true long-distance vision. But we do have consistent reliable access to the next right step for us. Not the logical one. The right one.
If you’re not a generator - find out here - and want to know more about your version of the sacral response, you can read more here, or join me for an online session where we go through your chart together, so that you have simple take-aways to actually use your design.
