Human Design: the Profile Lines
how you show up in the world & what the world wants from you
Human Design is a blend of modern science and ancient wisdom, bringing together astrology and quantum physics, chakras, the Kabbalah & and the Chinese I-Ching. It’s the ultimate profiling tool, giving us full permission to be ourselves. It offers a user manual for each of us, showing us how to be who we’re designed to be, how to work with our energy and how to make great decisions that are just right for each of us.

Human Design appears to a complex system, but it can be beautifully simply to integrate into your life, so I’m going to demystify it for you here in a series of posts; this one is all about Profile Lines.
What are Profile Lines in Human Design?
Profile is the two digits in your chart that look like this… 4/6 or 1/3 or 5/2 - these are your two Profile Lines. Profile is how you show up and meet your purpose, and it’s what the world wants from you. It’s been described as the costume of your purpose.
Below you’ll find the themes of each line.
The first number is ‘conscious’ and comes from your Sun gate on your Personality side, and the second number is ‘unconscious’ and comes from your Sun gate on your Design side. How your two numbers come together depends on which is first. This combination also tells you if you are here to have a journey that’s all about you, or all about others.

Line 1
The official name of the Line 1 is Investigator. If you have a 1 in your Profile, you were born with a fear that you ‘don’t know’ so you’ll always want to be finding out more, creating safety because the more you know the less you fear; you may find yourself researching, data-gathering and aiming to become an expert. Alone time will be valuable for you, which may seem self-focused and you may need encouraging to speak out. In the shadow you may always look to an expert instead of trusting yourself.
Line 2
The official name of the Line 2 is Hermit. If you have a 2 in your profile you will be naturally talented, and you often don’t need help to master that gift. You may not always see it yourself, or your value, but others will invite it out into the open. You likely love your own space to nurture yourself and your gifts, hence the name ‘hermit’. Be aware that you may express emotion outwards not always aware of it’s impact, so learning empathy is important.
Line 3
The official name of the Line 3 is the Martyr. If you have a 3 in your profile, this is all about the energy of trial and error, having your own experience rather than being told what works, challenging what is not true and role-modelling what needs to change. You have a leadership energy that enjoys attention and in the shadow you might walk away rather than stick at it, or seek others’ validation rather than trusting yourself.
Line 4
The official name of the Line 4 is Opportunist. If you have a 4 in your profile you need stability in friendships and community, to feel safe and trusting, and you’ll serve your community with your natural influence. Quality of life for you will equate to the quality of your connections, and you’re here to change the way people feel about others. In the shadow you will reject others if you sense you might be rejected, and pretend you’re fine when you’re not. (this is my profile line and I can say for sure that this shadow is so true, do look for it if you have a line 4, and lean in before you lean out… you are a wonderful people-person!)
Line 5
The official name of the Line 5 is Heretic. If you have a 5 in your profile you are here to heal yourself and help others heal, teaching what is in your chart. You might find that others are drawn to you, sensing your line 5 can ‘save them’ - use your Authority to know who is right for you to heal. In the shadow you may be in a victim state before you heal.
Line 6
The official name of the Line 6 is Role Model. If you have a 6 in your profile you have a 3-part path to follow. This line stands apart from the others and is here to give others permission to be themselves entirely (hello! I have this line and I know this is my path… that’s why I’m here sharing this after all 😘).
From birth to c.30 you’ll be very much like a line 3, all about learning from your mistakes. From c.30 to c.50 you’ll be called to retreat, heal and make sense of all your learnings, and probably raise children and settle in this phase too. From c.50 onwards you’ll be called back out into the world to be the role model, and it’s more important for you to BE than to DO.
